China Allocates 2 GHz Band Frequencies for Terrestrial Wireless Services
Good News for Advancing PHS Penetration
According to the January 2 issue of the "People's Communications News," China's National Radio Regulatory Committee issued a notice concerning the long-term plan for 2,000-MHz terrestrial wireless services and related issues. The notice indicated that a review had been made of 2,000-MHz band frequencies used for terrestrial wireless services, based on the frequency classification of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Further, it outlined the frequency allocations for such services and other related matters, with an eye toward supporting continuous development of radio communications technology and meeting the demand for wireless communications services.
Among the allocations, frequencies in the 1,900 - 1,920-MHz band were newly assigned as those for wireless access services using the time division duplex (TDD) method.
This frequency assignment means that PHS specifications conform with the access method and allocated frequencies. This is expected to provide momentum for advancing the penetration of PHS in China.
PHS trials under way in different Chinese cities
PHS service trials are being conducted at various locations in China with the aim of promoting the penetration of PHS in that country. The trials are aimed at providing three types of services. One involves the use of the public switched network to provide portable phone service. A second involves the use of PHS as a wireless local loop (WLL) to support access service. And the third involves the use of a PBX to provide premises service.
