Special Lecture was carried out on May 28 during WILLCOM FORUM & EXPO. Mr. Tadao Saito, Emeritus Professor at Tokyo University made a speech titled Expectation on PHS Regarding Next Generation Wireless Service.

Mr. Saito explained Moore’s Law and the drastic development of LSI, computer and data communication technologies. He then concluded that the era when one person handles a hundred computers with best performance of today is to come by 2010. However, looking at Japanese software and mobile phone market, we find that Japan is being separated from the rest of the world as it focuses on the development of its independent system, which are differentiated from others.
To avoid the repetition of this failure, Mr. Saito suggested replacing traditional vertical management led by operator with horizontal management led by vendors. He also suggested promoting standardization process in an open environment.

To conclude his speech, Mr. Saito expressed his support and wish to the success of wireless broadband service, which is to be carried out by WILLCOM in near future.

Following Mr. Saito, Mr. Yoshioki Chika, Vice President of WILLCOM Inc. delivered a lecture titled Counting Down on XGP Service—Report on the Latest Trend of XGP, Destined for BWA. 
As a trend of wireless technology, Mr. Chika first explained that any single wireless module in a wireless technology after 3.5G is supported by plural bands and plural methods. Next, he quoted Shannon’s Law and pointed out that the micro cell system granted by WILLCOM is the only choice to realize S/N improvement and bandwidth expansion, which are both essential elements to secure the capacity of broadband communication. Mr. Chika then added that WILLCOM can take advantage of the existing infrastructure resources while constructing a wireless broadband system based on XGP technology (=WILLCOM CORE) to realize BWA service. 

In his lecture, Mr. Chika also revealed that service at a speed of 3.2Mbps can be provided with existing W-OAM, and W-OAM-based W-SIM is under trial. He also indicated that XGP system has a good chance to be deployed in other countries in Asia, as cooperation between China Netcom regarding Core Module is being pushed forward.

Mr. Masashi Tsuchibashi, Vice President of WILLCOM Inc. delivered his lecture titled WILLCOM’s Target Business — WILLCOM Business Strategy as Wireless Broadband on Horizon in the afternoon session. He introduced WILLCOM’s achievement in Mr. Masashi Tsuchibashi, Vice President of WILLCOM Inc. delivered his lecture titled WILLCOM’s Targeted Mobile Business—Business Strategy as Broadband Service on Horizon in afternoon session. His speech contents include WILLCOM’s achievement in introducing Smart Phone to the market, various cases in marketing Smart Phone, Smart Phone model WILLCOM D4, which is to be released in coming July and WILLCOM strategy regarding WILLCOM CORE network.

Mr. Tsuchibashi introduced many possible ways to exploit various functions of WILLCOM D4. In one example, he demonstrated an office environment full of cradles, displays and keyboards for common use while make explanation. He also introduced the three cases in introducing smart phone, which were recognized and commended by Mobile Computing Promotion Consortium.

The lectures were carried out with full attendance, and contents regarding further expansion of PHS market, PHS related new products and strategies regarding WILLCOM CORE service are referred.
