Q. Please give us a brief introduction of your company.

  1. Hewlett-Packard is established in 1939. HP announces strategic realignment to create an independent measurement company composed of test and measurement components, chemical analysis and medical businesses in 1999. Following its successful IPO, Agilent Technologies becomes a fully independent company in 2000. Recognized as the industry leader for 70 years, Agilent is the biggest in the world’s test and measurement market. Agilent’s business is now focusing on test and measurement instrument in two fields: electronics⁄communication and chemical industry.

Q. What are your company features and the differences from other companies in general?

  1. In electronics⁄communication field, Agilent makes products from voltmeter, ammeter oscilloscope to test instrument for radio signal. In chemical field, its business covers instrument related to environmental biology and for blood analysis in hospitals.
    Almost all instruments used for water quality analysis by water authorities are Agilent products. We attribute its success to the reason that up 3000 to 4000 kinds of testers⁄measurement instruments are in stock for customers’ selection.
    On global market, Agilent is selling products and supporting businesses in over 110 countries and regions. Its service spots spreads cross out the world.

Q. What are your business strategies against your rival companies?

  1. We are aiming on a premier measurement company by devote our measurement technology to the world. In this field, we provide support for engineers, scientists, maker, general enterprises, researchers and government institutions worldwide. From home entertainment to national security, from food safety to network reliability, from wireless communication to genetic research for diseases, measurement tools and solutions by Agilent Technologies is covering wide range of businesses. Our world is to create productive, safe, healthy and comfortable life.

Q. What products related to telecommunication business do you make?

  1. We make all kinds of measurement instruments. Our instruments can be chosen to serve the need from the start of a telecom specification, to the implementation of service, to the various scenes of maintenance stage. Besides, we also assemble special test and measurement system according to client’s need. This kind of service is provided to some PHS related makers. Further more, since there is usually no existing measurement equipment for newly specified telecommunication standard when new telecom system is born, we developed business to modify the existing instruments and simulators to support the execution of appraisal⁄examination⁄test. We provide professional measurement systems for various standards of CDMA worldwide, and we also provide customized service to modify measurement system according to objective areas for PHS clients.

Q. Where are your major development offices and manufacturing lines?

  1. Development centers are scattered cross out the world. Local development center usually focus on the products sold on local market. PHS related system is developed by its Japanese branch located in the city of Hachioji. Measurement instruments used for wireless communication system are mainly developed in the U.S., Europe and Kobe Office in Japan. Agilent’s production lines are mostly in Asia.
  

Q. What do you think about your test and measurement instruments business in future?

  1. We believe that by carrying the applications with a measurement instrument loaded with Windows system, the environment for measurement solution, which corresponds to customer and various applications, will be further accelerated.
    1. Building an auto-measuring environment becomes easy, and multiple measurement instruments can be combined to accelerate the solution.
    2. Although the typical way of I⁄F communication among measurement instruments is still HP-IB (GP-IB), it will become practical in future to carry out simple and quick communication by making use of open architectures like LAN and USB.
    3. With the systemization process, complicated connection is to be replaced by simple plug-in.
    For example, if the market calls for the combination of WiMax with Next-generation PHS, carrying out tests and measurements with one unified system is definitely not a dream story.
