Interviewee : Mr. Yoshihiro Ishita
Deputy Chief, Corporate T&M Sales Division

The company quite active in the PHS related business is being introduced as a serial article on PHS MoU Group newsletters.

Q.Please let us know of your company profile in brief.
A.1895:    Anritsu's ancestor company Sekisansha Co. was founded
1931:    Anritsu Electric Co., Ltd. was founded by merger of Annaka Denki Seisakusho and Kyoritsu Denki
1985:    Company name has been changed to the present Anritsu Corporation
From the very first of the foundation, we have been manufacturing wireless as well as wired communications equipment and have secured a position as the long-established measuring instruments company.
Our business areas are the main IP network wireless measuring instruments and the other network surveillance and optical or high-frequency device network equipment.

Q.What are your company features and the differences from ordinary companies ?
A.Anritsu is a rare telecommunication measuring instruments company covering the whole areas of both wireless and wired communications.
We are covering the mobile telephone and other various wireless systems as well as ultrahigh-speed optical fiber communications such as FTTH (Fiber To The Home) etc. totally from their development to the maintenance measuring instruments for them.
As for the PHS, we released signaling tester, digital signal generator, transceiver tester, electric field strength tester at the beginning of its service and contributed to its system establishment by conducting field testing etc. jointly with companies concerned.
Further, our radio communication analyzer MT8801C is being used by many CS (Cell Station) and PS (Personal Station) vendors in Japan, China and Taiwan as industry standard equipment for manufacturing.
Anritsu is also the only one supplier of digital signal generator, transceiver tester and radio communication analyzer continued to be available for present advanced PHS as well.

Q.Please let us know of your company policy.
A.Our philosophy (company policy) is to contribute to the realization of ubiquitous network society by providing our original and high-quality products and services with sincerity, harmony and enthusiasm.
We will be the No.1 in the world to provide the test and measurement (T&M) solution to secure the quality of the next generation network elements (device, equipment, system) and services.

Q.What is the reason why you've decided to develop and sell the PHS and what is your present main product and product lineups ?
A.Because we received a strong request for developing digital measuring instruments as well from our customers who've been using many our products from the time of analog wireless equipment.
Anritsu succeeded in securing a position of industry standard digital modulation technology supplier because we've been developing that at our R&D center and so we could answer to our customers' requests for that timely.
Even while other measuring instruments companies have been eliminating the PHS from their product lineup to keep up with CDMA or W-CDMA, Anritsu still continued the PHS development with manufacturer's responsibility to the market.
At present, Anritsu is most good at W-CDMA and has approximately 60% share in the world.
Most of all our measuring instruments are designed available for multi-system so that the PHS, W-CDMA, CDMA2000 1xEV-DO, GSM, Wireless LAN etc. softwares are being installed in their common hardware as exclusive measuring software.

Q.Where are you manufacturing the products ?
A.Development is being done in Atsugi (Kanagawa, Japan) and manufacturing is at Tohoku Anritsu Co., Ltd. in Koriyama (Fukushima, Japan). And overseas, we have R&D and manufacturing bases in U.S.A. and UK.

Q.What are your customer companies ?
A.In Japan, WILLCOM, Sanyo, Kyocera, NetIndex, Murata are our main customers. And our products are also being used by UTStarcom, ZTE, Huawei in China and by EMS in Taiwan as well.

Q.What products are expected to be developed by your company 3, 5 and 10 years from now ?
A.3 years after, telecommunication industries will be at the stage of being ready for ALL IP, high-speed and ubiquitous NGN (Next Generation Network) service. As for wireless, HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access)/HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access) Rev.C, IEEE802.11n and so-called 3.5 Generation system will be diffused and new high-speed application will be in service. Advanced PHS will have been diffused and concrete validation testing of the Next Generation PHS will be conducted. As for measuring instruments, an enhancement of the present lineup will be enough.
5 years after, new reorganization of 4th Generation industries including the PHS will finally have started. Wired/Wireless and Telecom/Broadcasting will be merged to be a standard e-payment or security tool and from the standpoint of users, more one-stop services will have been provided. Hardware commonization will be more progressed to enter into the software radio area. Measuring instruments hardware will become more high-speed and broadbandized to be available for various communication systems by software radio.
Though we can hardly imagine 10 years after unfortunately.

Q.What do you think the present problems and the future view of the PHS as a whole ?
A.We think that the PHS based on microcell system would be most convenient for "Use as you like" service under mobile environment. At present, mobile PC environment using datacard has been established in Anritsu's sales division as well.
Both mobile telephone and wireless LAN are the same high-speed mobile communications service so that our target is to establish an advanced environment more earlier at low cost based on system simplicity and especially, we understand that business market enclosure is an urgent issue.
We are hoping to be of help to our customers from the standpoint of advanced Next Generation PHS and measuring instruments from now on.
