Mr. Junichi Jinno, Executive Officer, Corporate Communication Systems Equipment Group |
Q.
Please let us know of your company profile in brief.
A.
Kyocera was founded in 1959 as Kyoto Ceramics Corporation and merged Cybernet Electronics Corporation to enter into the telecommunication equipment market in 1982.
Our business is largely classified into three sectors such as fine ceramics related, electronics device related and equipment related and we've firmly established our business in each. Group companies are at present 181 in total and we will be trying to utilize our group's total power from now on.
Q.What are your company features and the differences from ordinary companies ?
A.When the former DDI POCKET, Inc. had been reformed to WILLCOM, Inc. in December 2004, Kyocera took part in that with 30% of the share capital. It means that we have an intention of growing the PHS business not only as equipment supplier but also network provider as well. So we have a strong attachment to that including our top managements. Kyocera has a clear vision of following up the PHS business.
Q.
What are your business strategies against your rival companies ?
A.We are hoping to promote the PHS business synthetically by providing wide range of product lineups covering CSs (Cell Stations), PSs (Personal Stations), data communication equipment, equipment based on advanced technologies, equipment based on next generation technologies etc. We don't have any specific rival companies.
Q.
Please let us know of your and your company's policy.
A.As for the PHS, we will be supporting it with an indomitable resolution.
QPlease let us know of your stock of knowledge, attitude and world view.
A.I'm always worrying about whether my decision was right or not. That's because the feature of our attitude to our job is simply to try to create constantly. It goes without saying that we should respond to our customer demands, however, we are also required to make a proposal exceeding those as well. In order to do so, we are prepared to make an investment if necessary. So we've been repeating the proposals to our customers while always worrying and confirming whether those are conforming with their demands and most suitable for them or not
Q.What is your company's social contribution policy (vision) ?
A.Our group's motto said that "Kyocera will contribute to the telecommunication industry and the company results with wireless & IP technology as a core business and further, to the human society".
Q.Mr. Kurosawa, how do you feel about Mr. Jinno as your boss ?
A.He seems to be deliberating all the time. He's been often absent on many business trips, however, after he returned from those, many staffs relying on him gathered around him from each division. He's a quite popular leader because he's not only instructing them but also trying to find actions toward the issue together with them.
Q.Could you tell us your company's R&D lineup ?
A.We cannot disclose the number of engineers, however, the ratio of domestic to overseas engineers would be roughly 2 to 1.
Q.What is your view of the domestic/international division of work and outsourcing and further, what specific organization do you have ?
A.Most of the software design is now being shifted to overseas locations such as Bangalore, India etc. Kyocera has already established Kyocera Zhenhua Communication Equipment Co., Ltd. (KZC) in Beijing, China to secure the local manufacturing capacity. Shanghai Kyocera Trading Co., Ltd. (SKTC) is our foothold for sales promotion, maintenance and repair of the PHS in China. Further, we are planning to establish a foothold in Thailand, India, Russia etc. as well. We'd like to form an alliance with local entities actively as a part of our international cooperation.
Q.What is the reason why you've decided to develop and sell the PHS and what is your present main product and product line up ?
A.Kyocera has been involved in the PHS business from the very first of its birth and never entered this market halfway. We'd like to strengthen our business foothold and make it grow further from now on.
Q.What are your customer companies and your shares in the major PHS market China ?
A.In Japan, WILLCOM, Inc. is our main customer. As for overseas customers, we have a business relationship mainly with ZTE Corporation and Lucent Technologies, however, recently a small relationship with UTStarcom unfortunately.
Q.What products are expected to be developed by your company 3, 5 and 10 years from now ?
A.3, 5 years from now, we will be developing 4G mobile products because it's an extension of the 3.5G which we are now developing, however, we can't predict such after 10 years from now.
Q.What do you think the present problems and the future view of the PHS as a whole ?
A.We think that whether the PHS can survive or co-exist with other mobile phones or not may depend on how telecom companies and vendors view that. We believe that the PHS will grow further if we can find the solution to the above with a strong motivation.
We've got a definite feeling that Mr. Jinno has been skillfully managing the communication system related business which should become more difficult. We'd expect his further effort toward that from now on.
