PHS related Exhibits at gWireless Japan 2003h

The largest wireless & mobile exhibition in Japan gWireless Japan 2003h was held from July 16-18, 2003 at gTokyo Big Sighth, with approximately 170 exhibitors and 37,000 attendees.
Notable PHS-related exhibits included the following:
1) Exhibits of DDI POCKET
256 kbps Data Communications Demo
DDI POCKET, Inc. is currently providing packet data communications commercial service with a maximum data speed of 128 kbps. An acceleration technology to double the maximum speed to 256 kbps was demonstrated with a PCMCIA card type PHS terminal.
The specific enabling technology is the 16-QAM modulation format from the lower layer protocol for gAdvanced PHSh. This technology has been included in the gARIB STD-28 V4.0h standard. Commercialization plans have not yet been announced.
Proposals for card type PHS Terminalfs Applications
Functional expansions with the PHS service by inserting SD or CF type PHS terminal cards into various devices were proposed using mock-ups.
Example applications included instant image data transfer services for digital cameras and PHS edual modef operation of GSM terminals, etc.
Exhibits and Seminars on gH" Virtual Officeh
Various types of tools and system solutions using gAirH"h for mobile access to an existing intranet or new construction of entire intranet system with mobile access functionality were exhibited. These exhibits were supplemented with seminars in an adjacent seminar room at the exhibition site.
The service included a gGateway Seriesh for security applications, a gPackage Seriesh (groupware or gNet Printh etc.), and a gProfessional Seriesh for the construction of specialized intranet systems..
gNet Printh is a printout service offered at gSeven-Elevenh convenience stores throughout Japan. The service allows users to transfer files to a print a server for gNet Printh via AirH" gPRINh (DDI POCKETfs Internet service). The service is targeted at businessmen working out of the office, as well as other users with mobile printing needs.

2) Exhibits of NTT DoCoMo
At the NTT DoCoMo, Inc. booth, a wristwatch type PHS terminal, gWRISTOMOh, (see PHS MoU Group News No.45) was displayed, together with a CF card type PHS/Wireless LAN dual-mode data communications card hP-in Free2PWLh (see the separate article in this issue). A flat-rate data communications service g@FreeDh (refer to the PHS MoU Group News No.45) was also shown. The hWRISTOMOh was especially popular with visitors.
3) Exhibits of other Participants
At the booth of SANYO Electric Co., Ltd., other than the hH"h based PHS camera phone gLeje H-SA3001Vh (see the separate article in this issue), a high-performance, small-sized PHS Cell Station (CS) based on Adaptive Array/Spatial Division Multiple Access technology and a future Advanced PHS base station were displayed on a monitor screen.
PHS terminals for the Chinese market were displayed at the Kyocera Corporation booth and various types of gAirH"h data communications cards were shown at NEC Infrontia Corporationfs booth.
Other booths displaying devices included PHS data communications cards for mobile providing compelling evidence that PHSfs application to mobile data communications has been spreading steadily.
