DDI POCKET, Inc. (DDI POCKET) held a press conference on its PHS business's actual situation and future deployment plan on September 5, 2002.

PHS has been developing primarily for the voice communication, however, due to the maturity of the mobile telephone, intensified competition with the cellular system, cost increase by high subsidy for expensive terminals etc., DDI POCKET is shifting its core business from voice to mobile data in order to fully utilize PHS's advantages and this has significantly improved our management.

Some of promising PHS mobile application examples in business scene are virtual office use which enables intranet access even outside the office (DDI POCKET started AirH" base wireless intranet platform service under the name of "H" Virtual Office" from November 1, 2002), efficient management by acquiring real-time information, application for the telemetering system such as vending machine, gas meter etc. Internet access by PDA or other portable devices "anytime", "anywhere" and access by heavy users, substitution use for fixed Internet access etc. are PHS's mobile application examples for consumers.

In order to promote even more convenient use of the data service AirH", DDI POCKET is expanding its 128 kbps service area, semi-flat-rate service (flat-rate up to 25 hours) introduction to the existing 128 kbps flat-rate service, widening of the product variation such as data communication card etc., introduction of the data compression service which can improve sensible data speed and network utility efficiency.

As for the product variation, currently PCMCIA(Personal Computer Memory Card International Association) card type and CF(Compact Flash) card type (by HONDA ELECTRON CO., LTD and NEC Infrontia Corporation: shown below ) are available and in addition to those, miniaturized and cost effective type such as USB type (by Fujitsu : shown below), SD(Secure Digital) card type (by Seiko Instruments Inc. : refer to the PHS MoU Group news No. 41) etc. will also become available for users' wide selection.

PHS can provide a powerful infrastructure to realize a ubiquitous market because of the Japanese nationwide covering area and the above mentioned miniaturization of the terminals. DDI POCKET is promoting an installation of PHS into home electric appliances and trying to open up the new market.

This product is the CF card type Personal Station (PS) equipped with removable rotary antenna and the telephone call can also be made through Microsoft Pocket PC2002TM installed PDA's (Personal Data Assistant) microphone and speaker.
