PHS Data Communications Functions Widely Used for Portable Information Terminals

New products that endow the WorkPad family of personal digital assistants (PDAs) with PHS data communications functions were released.

  1. Kyushu Matsushita Electric Co., Ltd. (KME) started sales of data communications cable "KX-HA10" for connecting KME's hybrid PHS terminal H" "KX-PH35S" and IBM's PDA "WorkPad c3" with PalmOS or PalmVx. Without using a communications unit sold separately, the data communications cable "KX-HA10" enables 19.2 kbit/s data communications, while simplifying operations and improving the external appearance.

  2. IBM Japan Co., Ltd. commenced sales of WorkPad 31J, which has a PHS unit built in to the WorkPad 31J. 31J users can easily browse websites and send/receive e-mails, without the use of cables or cellular/PHS phones. Consumers are allowed to use the PDA in rooms or places without telephones, resulting in improved mobility.
