TTNet's New PHS Terminal "AJ-51" Compatible with Open Internet Service "Dot-i"

In mid-December 2000, Tokyo Telecommunications Network Co., Inc. (TTNet) commenced an open Internet service called "Dot-i." At the same time, a new PHS terminal compatible with the "Dot-i" named "AJ-51" was put on the market.

Outline of Dot-i

Dot-i is an open Internet service utilizing features of PHS such as strength in data communications and low cost. Through Internet connection with a PHS terminal, users can enjoy viewing various websites and using e-mails. In comparison with conventional mobile Internet services, the service has superior characteristics including a flexible user environment and high affinity with the Internet that are acquired by using standard technologies and protocols employed by the Internet protocols. The service meets various personal as well as corporate user demands in combination with an intranet environment or mobile use.

Features of "AJ-51" -- the first Dot-i compatible PHS terminal

A major difference between Dot-i and existing Internet connection service from mobile terminals
With AJ-51, users can register up to four Internet provider accounts. Multiple addresses such as home-use and office-use e-mail accounts can be used anywhere.

Open Internet that everyone can access
Another big difference is open specifications employing standard Internet technologies and protocols. The service carries PPP, TCP/IP, POP3, SMTP, HTTP and HTML subsets including C-HTML. In other words, Dot-i is an open service that everyone can access. Users can browse various types of content over the Internet such as websites for existing mobile terminals. From now on, numerous services using technologies specific to Dot-i (location information service, melody data for incoming call indication, etc.) will be offered.

Everyone can easily use the Internet at lower prices
With AJ-51, up to three Internet providers that the user subscribes can be set up. The terminal also carries a free online sign-up menu for an Internet service contract offered by Dot-i. Users can obtain up to two e-mail addresses.

Sufficient-sized e-mail, easy-operation buttons
The maximum size of incoming e-mail is about 5,000 two-byte characters (maximum 16KB including attached data) and that of outgoing e-mail is 2,500 two-byte characters. A "monochrome 4-grade large-sized monitor" which can display a maximum of 100 characters or a 120x140-dot image is employed. Lengthy business mails or mails with images can be sent/received easily. With three menu buttons linked to the monitor, Internet connection or e-mail transmission/reception can be made with one-touch control. User-friendly icons simplify various settings.

Enabling access to corporate networks
Dot-i is applicable with PHS business systems, location information services and the like. Just attaching a commercial terminal adapter, users can easily construct low-priced solutions combining mobile and intranet services.

Enhanced Super Smooth EX (extra)
The Super Smooth Extra (EX), equipped with two radios, enables clearer, less interrupted communications using an improved control device which optimizes radio communications conditions during calls and waiting calls while moving at high speed.

Enabling access to and download from Super Melody Indicating Incoming Call website (Ref. PHS MoU News No. 24) (Scheduled to commence in January of 2001)

Compatible with direct mails among terminals supporting Dot-i (maximum 2,500 two-byte characters in transmission/reception)
