COMDEX Award for PHS Technology

PHS Terminal Wins “Best of COMDEX Japan AWARD”

NTT Personal Group’s PHS terminal “Super Paldio 551S” won the grand prix at “COMDEX/Japan ’98,” held from April 6 to 9, 1998, at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba Prefecture.

This brand new Paldio allows users to access the Internet without signing up with an Internet service provider and to send/receive e-mail messages easily and inexpensively. There was much praise for the Paldio as a terminal well suited to beginners, which is also expected to increase use of e-mail.

The Paldio is a multifunctional PHS terminal with a large easy-to-read liquid crystal display (LCD). Users can create messages and illustrations with the unit’s touch pen and send them via “Paldio E-Mail” and “Paldio I-Mail.” All operations are accessable from the menu on the display by choosing services with the pen.
The unit’s telephone directory can hold data for up to 150 addresses: three phone numbers and one e-mail address per address.
Weather reports and snow conditions at ski resorts can be downloaded from NTT Central Personal Communications Network Inc.’s Information Distribution Center.
“Paldio E-Mail” is a new type of service that gives e-mail access to users who simply subscribe to PHS service with NTT Central Personal. It is not necessary to sign up with an Internet provider. Users send e-mail addresses, headers and messages to NTT Central Personal’s “E-Mail Center” with PHS terminals designed for the service. They can read e-mail by accessing the center. The service also allows users to exchange e-mail with non-subscribers who have Internet access.
The communications charge via the center is ¥7 per 10 seconds all day long regardless of distance.

“Paldio I-Mail” is an image data exchange service between subscribers. Users can transmit phone numbers, hand-written memos or illustrations to NTT Central Personal’s “I-Mail Center” using PHS terminals designed for the service. They can access the center and retrieve image data sent to them. The service also allows users to send image data to G3 facsimiles.
The transmission charge via I-Mail Center is ¥7 per 10 seconds all day long regardless of distance.
